Foreign Language Instruction at LCHS

Liberty’s foreign-language strategy focuses on depth and intensity in key languages useful in general communication and in reinforcing English-language proficiency.

Spanish – Learning a language requires exposure to large amounts of that language and getting accustomed to communicating in that language even when one does not understand every word;  Thus, the vast majority of course activities are conducted in Spanish.

Foreign LanguageStudents are frequently asked to work in pairs or small groups and students are asked t make every attempt to communicate in Spanish while in class.  Further, students are required to listen to the audio resources, to study vocabulary and grammar on their own outside of class, and to complete a variety of written assignments, including grammar exercises and compositions.

Liberty’s Spanish course offerings culminate in the development of the four basic language skills – reading, listening, speaking and writing – in preparation for the Spanish AP exam. Scholars achieving this level of proficiency can expect to read from works by Cervantes, Neruda, Borges, Garcia-Lorca, Garcia-Marquez and others.

Latin – Wheelock’s Latin and Wheelock’s Latin Reader are the texts used for all LCHS Latin classes.  Additional Latin texts are used at the instructor’s discretion.

LatinThe LCHS Latin program culminates in an AP Latin course developing reading, listening, speaking and writing proficiency.  Continued emphasis is on oral proficiency along with grammar and verbs.  AP Latin at LCHS follows the AP curriculum for the year’s test.

Latin instruction at Liberty begins at our elementary school starting in kindergarten.
